BetterLinux Releases cPanel WHM Plug-in

10/09/2013 16:35

The new cPanel plug-in, to be shown at next week’s cPanel Conference 2013 in New Orleans, makes BetterLinux more user-friendly than ever before, especially for smaller web hosts.

BetterLinux, the Linux server optimizer, has released one of its more anticipated features, a plug-in for cPanel’s WHM. The plug-in, simply called BetterLinux Manager, makes server-by-server administration quick and easy, primarily for the smaller web hosting company.

BetterLinux is known for offering the industry’s single greatest collection of server configuration options. While powerful, so many command-line options can be daunting for some, especially for smaller brands. BL Manager changes that sentiment completely with its intuitive, no-instructions-required interface.

This addition marks a broader focus for BetterLinux, which was first designed for larger hosting companies. In its early development, BetterLinux was tested extensively in the largest production environments, including Bluehost and other Endurance brands. Such companies are unlikely to use a WHM plug-in since they tend to roll out wide changes across scores of servers at once. For this and other reasons, most administrators in the largest production environments use the command line exclusively, which is unlikely to change.

But for those who prefer a graphical user interface,BetterLinux Manager now caters to a much broader range of customers who will be happy to have a product capable of taming any system extreme, in companies large or small.

While very useful, not every BetterLinux feature is accessible through the plug-in. Certain advanced features and customization beyond cPanel packages still require command-line controls. But the average smaller host will have what they need right inside BetterLinux Manager.

“We want BetterLinux to be easy and accessible to everyone, and I think that’s what we’ve done,” said Matt Heaton, BetterLinux founder and CEO.

BetterLinux will be showing off the new plug-in at next week’s cPanel Conference 2013 in New Orleans, LA (Sept 30 – Oct 2nd). Visit booth number 310.

Here are a few interesting aspects of BetterLinux Manager:

Easy Administration

•Start, restart, or stop any BetterLinux service with a click.
•Simple layout with tabs, rows, columns, input boxes, and on/off switches
•Automatically verify that your configuration syntax is correct before turning on services.

Customization

•Use BetterLinux default settings or customize all throttling settings per cPanel package.

General Controls

•Choose a percentage of a CPU core each user may use.
•Choose how many concurrent processes are allowed per user.
•Choose how much RSS memory each user may use before initiating a log entry or repeating kill command.
•The log or kill option is also available when sshd, crond, httpd, and chroothttpd run longer than allowed.

I/O Controls

•Apply global as well as per-package settings.
•Create separate settings for each device mount point within a package.
•Global “seek balancing” enables automatic throttling of seek-heavy processes across the whole system.
•Global “auto scaling” makes unused I/O bandwidth available to defined users beyond their standard limits, but below a defined target disk utilization. This prevents wasted resources and gives defined users enhanced performance, all while maintaining total control.
•Auto scaling also works at the per-package level, giving unused package resources to other package members beyond standard limits. Auto scaling turns every package into package+ service at no cost to providers. And by observing users of surplus I/O, you can see who may be fit for a higher package.

Easy installation

•Installs automatically with an upgrade or fresh install on version 1.0.4-1 and newer.

Where to find it

•You’ll see BL Manager at the bottom of the WHM menu under Plugins.
